Wednesday Randoms

A few things I'm in to right now:

  • Carly Smithson on Idol. My Carly-love is surpassing my Brooke-love. Michelle and I have both actually called to vote for Carly this season. In seven seasons, I had never voted before Brooke and Carly. I do like David Cook as well. We bought the Billie Jean single from iTunes. Here's Carly's performance from last night. (YouTube video)

  • LibraryThing Early Reviewers. I just found out that I'm getting my sixth free book to review since the program started back in June. Very cool!
  • New Hope. Michelle and I are staying at a very great inn this weekend in New Hope, PA to celebrate the 6th anniversary of our Commitment Ceremony. I can't wait!
  • The Holly Jacket. After a gauge issue, I have restarted this and have decided to have the right side of the stockinette showing, rather than the reverse side as is done in the pattern. I'm knitting this right now with the goal of wearing it to MS&W although I'm doubtful that it will be done in time.
  • How I Met Your Mother. Have you seen Robin Sparkles' newest video?

Sewing (and Spike)

A few weeks ago, my friends Craig and Laura opened Spool, a fabric store right next door to Craig's yarn store, Loop. The store is absolutely beautiful, even to someone like me who can barely thread a needle.

Jody and I went to the opening party and while I was there, I signed up for the Learn to Sew class.

The first week, I picked out fabric, learned how to use the measuring grids and rulers and the rotary cutter (Laura was very concerned that I was going to slice off a finger). We also pressed and cut the fabric. We spent the last 30 minutes of the class learning about the sewing machine- how to thread the bobbin, use the needle threader, change the tension, etc.

Fabric

Over the past five years that I've been a knitter, I have learned that putting colors together is not one of my strengths. I often walk into loop, tell them what I'm looking for in a yarn (gauge, fiber, washing instructions), the number of colors I need, and ask for suggestions. I just don't have an eye for color. I was VERY overwhelmed when it came time to select fabric so I picked the red one for the outside of the bag and Laura pointed out a few that would work on the inside. I settled on the stripes.

In the second week, we got down to sewing. Aimee (see blog here) was a great teacher throughout the class and I'm really looking forward to learning more about sewing from her. She was very helpful when I had a tension issue after refilling my bobbin with thread and had to rip out a whole seam. I was proud of the patience I had in those moments. Many a time in the past, I would have hated not being good at sewing (even though I was just learning) and really beaten myself up about it. I just looked at it as an opportunity to learn how to use the seam ripper. (Okay, yeah, I was frustrated but I'm trying to be more zen.)

I am happy with the way most of the stitches look.

Not bad for a first try.

Next I'm taking the skirt making class using one of Aimee's patterns. Hooray for sewing!

The Spike question:

A number of people mentioned the absence of Spike on my I love Buffy post. Here's the thing. I have a love/ hate relationship with Spike, much like Buffy does. I think he was a crack up in the Drucilla days and very amusing in the Harmony days. Unlike many people, I actually enjoy pining-for-Buffy Spike. I like Spike with a soul. (Most overused line on a show ever: Spike has a soul now!)

SPOILER WARNING (is it still a spoiler if the show ended four years ago? If you have watched the show though you might want to skip this part.)

I can't get over the fact that Spike tried to rape Buffy. I know. I know. The show is about killing. Spike killed tons of people, all over England and America for a hundred and forty years. He tried to kill Buffy multiple times. I can get past all of that. He's a vampire and vampires need blood. Whatever, I'm over it. But I can not get over the attempted rape. So, many times, Spike is the highlight of an episode (or even a season) for me, but only if I don't think about that one thing that he almost did in season 6, episode 19. The one thing that prompted him to get a soul. So there it is.

I actually didn't intentionally leave Spike off of my list. But when I thought about why he wasn't on there, this is why.

Look at me. I'm dancing crazy!

On this, Sarah Michelle Gellar's 31st birthday, I thought I'd tell you a little about my new love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Last August, when we were on vacation, we bought a used copy of Season 1 on DVD. Between then and last week, we watched all seven seasons. For years, friends and coworkers have been telling me that I'd love Buffy. They were right.

Here are 10 reasons why:

  1. Once More, With Feeling. The musical episode is awesome. I love it. Seriously. I bought the CD the day after we watched the episode. It's the only thing I've listened to on my iPod since it arrived in the mail over a week ago. From Anya and Xander's song (source of the title of this post), to the less than 5 lines Willow sings in the whole episode, it is the most clever, fun, silly, and addictive episode of tv that I've ever seen.
  2. Willow. I love Willow. I usually can't stand Tara (and her damned stuttering) and I really hate Kennedy (SHUT UP, KENNEDY!) but I love Willow. From her nerdy, research days to her random declarations of her gayness, I love the way that Willow handles herself.
  3. Bad Angel. I have moments of enjoying the Buffy/ Angel love dynamic. But I love every minute of evil Angel.
  4. Anya. Anya is awesome. She says just what is on her mind and people really don't get that. I do though. Probably because I do the same thing.
  5. Giles and the constant cleaning of the glasses.
  6. The Bronze. Slutty Faith dances. Endless fights with vamps. Cordelia and Xander flirting. It all happens at the Bronze.
  7. Andrew. He's awesome. I hate Warren. I love Andrew.
  8. The Library. I love that for the first few seasons, the Library is home base.
  9. Leather pants and coats. You've never seen so much leather in California!
  10. Buffy. I love Buffy.

Indiana Avenue

HowManyOfMe.com
Logo There are
129
people with my name
in the U.S.A.
How many have your name?
When I saw this little box on Sandy's blog I had to click through to find out how many people in the US have my name. I believe there are at least three of us in Philadelphia.
For the past several months, I have been getting phone calls from collection agencies looking for someone with my name.  The conversations are always the same and I am so tired of saying the same things.
Angry Collection Dude: Is this Rainbow Chills?
Me: Yes, that is my name.
ACD: I'm calling about a debt.
Me: I think you're looking for someone else. I think you are looking for a Rainbow Chills who lives on Indiana Avenue.
ACD: This is Rainbow Chills in Philadelphia?
Me: Yes, but I don't live on Indiana Avenue.
ACD: But your ssn ends with: ****
Me: No it doesn't. You are looking for a different Rainbow Chills.
There have been times when I have come home to phone messages from men who are practically screaming into my machine about how I MUST CALL THEM BACK. VERY IMPORTANT. NEED TO SPEAK TO ME TODAY! And then I call them and they start to get nasty and ask me how I plan to pay off the eleventy three kajillion dollars that I owe on my CitiBank card. And I tell each one THAT I DON"T HAVE A CITIBANK CARD. And by the way, I have excellent credit!
Every time the calls stop, I forget about them and get lulled into a false sense of financial security. And then a few weeks later, a new collection company will call and the process begins anew. Good grief!
A few weeks ago, I was paying for pizza delivery with my debit card and when I told the girl who was taking my order what my name was, she said, "I have a niece named Rainbow Chills." It took everything in me not to ask, "Does your niece live on Indiana Avenue?"

Oops

With the PA Presidential Primary only three weeks away, we're getting alot of attention here in Philadelphia.

Today's front page story on the Metro, a free daily paper, is about Hillary Clinton's comparison of herself to Rocky Balboa.

I think my officemate summed it up best when he said, "Bad analogy. Rocky lost. To a black guy."

Oops.
